Founded in 2015, Orfeus Barock Stockholm has established itself as one of the leading early music ensembles in the Nordic countries. The ensemble’s own concert series at the Stockholm Concert Hall brings together musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Sweden’s leading freelance baroque musicians. After delighting audiences on its first visit to Helsinki Seriös in spring 2023, Orfeus now returns to perform with Italian clarinet virtuoso Lorenzo Coppola.
Orfeus Barock musicians performing in Helsinki:
Emma Nyman from Gothenburg is a freelance musician who plays classical and baroque music. In addition to Orfeus Barock, she is a guest concertmaster at Folkoperan and first violinist and violist in Nordic orchestras. She has studied in Stockholm, Prague and Barcelona, which is why the world-famous artist Lorenzo Coppola is visiting Kammaren! Emma plays a violin built by Giuseppe dall’Aglio in Mantua in 1840.
Catalina Langborn comes from Stockholm and works as a freelancer in several baroque ensembles and as an orchestral musician, chamber musician and concertmaster. She is a permanent member of the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble and Orfeus Barock at the Stockholm Concert Hall. Catalina has also been a regular artist at Drottningholm Palace Theatre and the Confidencen Opera and Music Festival since 2016.
Christopher Öhman comes from Jakobstad in Finland and is a violinist in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been a member of Orfeus Barock since it was founded ten years ago and also works as a freelance baroque and pop musician. Johannes Rostamo from Espoo is principal cellist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, professor of cello at the Royal College of Music and cello teacher at the Royal College of Music.
Johannes Rostamo from Espoo is principal cellist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, professor of cello at the Royal College of Music and artistic director of the historical instrument ensemble Orfeus Barock Stockholm. Johannes plays a cello made by Antonio Stradivari in 1698 on a generous loan from the Conni Jonsson family.
Lorenzo Coppola was born in Rome. He studied the historical clarinet under Eric Hoeprich at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (the Netherlands). After moving to Paris in 1991, he started performing with various ensembles specialising in historical instruments, including the Freiburger Barockorchester, Les Arts Florissants, La Petite Bande, the XVIII Century Orchestra and La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy.
He performs chamber music regularly with musicians such as Andreas Staier, Isabelle Faust, Alexander Melnikov, Teunis van der Zwart, Hidemi Suzuki, the Kuijken Quartet, the Zefiro ensemble and the Terpsycordes quartet. Together with pianist Cristina Esclapez, he founded Ensemble Dialoghi, which explores the chamber music repertoire widely, paying special attention to communication with the audience.
Since 2004, he has taught historical clarinet at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. He has recorded significant pieces of the clarinet repertoire for (Harmonia Mundi), including Mozart’s clarinet concerto (with Freiburger Barockorchester), Mozart’s clarinet quintet (with Kuijken Quartet), Brahms’ sonatas (with Andreas Staier), Mozart and Beethoven’s winds and fortepiano quintets (with Cristina Esclapez and Ensemble Dialoghi).
